If it’s been a while since your last dental visit, you might be feeling a little nervous about what to expect. Maybe you’re worried it’ll hurt. Maybe you’re embarrassed about how your teeth look. Or maybe you just don’t know what actually happens during a cleaning.
A professional teeth cleaning is one of the easiest, most comfortable appointments you’ll ever have. And at Ridge Family Dental, Dr. Viktoria Sverdlov and our team go out of our way to make sure you feel relaxed from the moment you walk in.

Step 1: A Warm Welcome (and a Quick Check-In)
First, our team will greet you and get you settled. If you’re a new patient, we’ll review your health history and ask about any concerns. If you’re a returning patient, we’ll check in on anything that’s changed since your last visit.
This is also your chance to speak up. Nervous? Let us know. Sensitive teeth? Mention it. The more we know, the better we can tailor your visit.
Step 2: A Look Around
Before the cleaning begins, the hygienist or Dr. Sverdlov will take a quick look inside your mouth. They’re checking for obvious signs of trouble:
- Swelling
- Redness
- Sores
- Anything that looks unusual
They may also use a small intraoral camera for a closer look. Don’t worry; it’s tiny and comfortable. And the best part? You get to see what they see on the screen. No mysteries. No guessing.
Step 3: Removing Plaque and Tartar
Now the actual cleaning begins. Using a small, handheld tool called a scaler, the hygienist gently scrapes plaque and tartar off your teeth. Plaque is the soft, sticky film that forms daily. Tartar forms when plaque hardens, and you can’t remove it with a toothbrush alone.
You’ll feel some scraping, and you might hear it too. That’s completely normal. It shouldn’t hurt, but if you feel any discomfort, just raise your hand. Our team will adjust.
Step 4: Polishing
Once the tartar is gone, it’s time to polish. The hygienist uses a small, spinning rubber cup with a gritty toothpaste-like paste. It gently scrubs away surface stains and leaves your teeth feeling smooth and clean.
This part is actually pretty satisfying. Many patients say their teeth feel “slippery” afterward, in a good way.
Step 5: Flossing
Yes, we floss your teeth too. But it’s a little more thorough than what you do at home. The hygienist uses a special technique to clean below the gumline and between each tooth.
If your gums bleed a little, don’t panic. That’s often a sign of mild inflammation, and it usually improves with regular cleanings.
Step 6: Rinsing and a Final Look
After flossing, you’ll rinse out your mouth. Then Dr. Sverdlov will do a final exam. She’ll check your teeth, gums, and bite. She may also take digital X-rays if it’s been a while since your last set.
If she spots anything, such as a small cavity, early gum disease, or something to watch, she’ll explain it clearly and answer your questions. No pressure. No confusing jargon. Just honest information so you can make the best decision for your health.
Step 7: Scheduling Your Next Visit
That’s it. You’re done. Before you leave, the front desk will help you schedule your next cleaning, usually in about six months.
And if you’re due for X-rays or a fluoride treatment, we’ll let you know.
